The Members

Who are the Members?

Members of the Caribbean Life Club are as diverse as the countries from which they come – and very often want to go! They range from “Twenty-Somethings” ready to stake their claim to the brave new worlds of Central and South America to retiring (and refiring!) Baby Boomers ready to tackle life anew and live it to its fullest.

Here’s how CLC founder Carter Clews describes the “typical” Caribbean Life Club Member:

“The typical CLC member is the young of heart -- at any age. They’re the people who measure time not in years, but in deeds … by where they’ve been, whom they’ve met, what they’ve done – and, more importantly, what they intend to do.

“They’re the people who won’t be defined by the calendar on the wall. They don’t accept anyone telling them what they can’t, or can’t, do because they’ve had a few too many – or, maybe too few – birthdays. They know that the adventure doesn’t stop until you stop the adventure. And they don’t stop.

“When I first moved to Honduras – and I was 64 at the time – I saw a lot of what I call ‘CLC-type people.’ They weren’t there to call it a day. And they certainly were not ready to ‘go gently into that good night.’ Most of them had enjoyed some degree of success in their careers, and now they were ready to start anew. Sometimes in a related field. Often in a totally new field they had always wanted to try and were now ready to tackle.

“And for what I call the ‘youngsters’ – those in their late twenties or early thirties coming down with little more than a burlap backpack and heart full of hopes – in some ways, CLC membership is all the more exciting. Theirs is the New American Dream. And I have a feeling that if they stay the course, “theirs is the earth and everything that’s in it.”

“So, who is a Caribbean Life Club member? I guess I would sum it up by saying it is that wonderfully adventurous individual of any age, gender, race, color, or creed, who nods in easy acknowledgement when he or she reads the words of Browning: “Ah, but a man’s reach must exceed his grasp, Or what’s a heaven for?”

Welcome to The Club!
